    I installed WordPress Multisite on a sub-domain let's say the sub-domain name is multi.domain.com.

Now if I try to set up a network i have to use site1.multi.domain.com

Is there a way to have the multistie installed on a subdomain (multi.domain.com) but have the network aslo use notmal subdomains? like site1.domain.com.

Yes, there are two ways I know of achieving that:
    1) install WP multisite (subdomain) on multi.domain.com then install WP domain mapping plugin to map site1.multi.domain.com -> site1.domain.com
    2) install WP multiste on (subdomain) on domain.com, then all sites will be site1.domain.com, site2.domain.com, etc

I'll look into Option 1. Option 2, the default method, isn't available to me because the domain is in use for another purpose. Thanks!

Forgot to include the link to WP domain mapping plugin - http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/

FYI, we have implemented option #1. domain.com or http://www.domain.com was already an existing site that we could not use. We installed WP into another domain, wp.domain.com, then mapped all of our subsites (site1.domain.com) using the domain mapping plugin. We have over 200 sites running this way.
