 * how can I create a custom start page section, eg to show a calendar on the start
   page?

 * If you have set the start page with our “Business Template” means changed the
   reading settings like as in this [screenshot](http://prntscr.com/lqer8g) then
   you can place calendar or many more widgets at the footer section only.
 * In case if reading setting set only for posts on the Homepage ([screenshot](http://i.prntscr.com/YysAc60gQhWTlDWrxIOOJQ.png))
   then you could place widgets either at the footer or at the sidebar of the page.(
