# Create header

 * Is there a place where a dumb nubie like me can begin to learn how to create 
   a header (text and image) like was done at “Peoples Magazine”? The header is 
   both simple and elegant. Peoples magazine is a WordPress application. If changes
   are done in the header code…where?

 * First create a child theme so that your changes won’t be overwritten when you
   theme is updated. Then you can make a copy of header.php and put it in your child
   theme — make changes on that copy. You’ll need to know some HTML and CSS to do
   custom work. There are many tutorials out there — google will help you find some.

 * Check out Firebug — an addon to Firefox browser that shows you which CSS is affecting
   an element or area of the page. Then you copy that code (or the portion that 
   you want to change) to the custom CSS, make the change and voila! Firebug has
   tons of other useful tools and features for web dev work as well. Good info and
   tutorials on their site.

 * In wordpress themes twenty eleven and twenty twelve you can click to choose not
   to use a header image and just use the header text. You can choose a color for
   the header text. This means there will be a text header and a menu like the People
   Magazine header. Here is a link to a video screencast tutorial for creating a
   custom header and custom logo for theme twenty twelve. Hope this helps. Good

 * Thank you, florenceoregon for the great information. I must say that unfortunately
   my programming skills leave a GREAT deal to be desired. I was wondering, however,
   if you have viewed the WP-Creativix and Showcase templates? If so, what do you
   think of them for pages that are more graphic than text?
