Create blog page

I want to keep my homepage static and create a page for the blog. I tried going to settings, under “reader” and followed the directions here:http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-create-a-separate-page-for-blog-posts-in-wordpress/ but then my homepage became blank and everything on my homepage was moved to the blog page. I just want a new page where I can make blog posts, keeping my homepage as is.

Any ideas?
