Support » Fixing WordPress » Create a private area of website

  • I need to create a “private” area of a WP website. Nothing too fancy, just a number of pages that can be accessed to registered users only. I do not need a register page, as users will be manually added.

Coming from Joomla, I have given this feature for granted (i.e. limiting access to areas of website depending on users level) but it seems WP limits only to Admins, or allow for a password (that’s tied to the page, same for all users).

I found some plugins, but these are quite expensive.

Any suggestion would be welcome. Thanks!

I’ve found this plugin that’s free:
    https://ultimatemember.com/

But it seems it protects just a menu item: if I get the url and share it, it’s possible to access the page without logging in.

You’ve got some very basic functionality directly included in WordPress: If you publish a page/post as “Private”, it will only be available to logged-in users.
With some membership plugins you can control navigation menus, etc, too.

That’s not entirely correct. To allow simple subscribers to see Private posts you need to add some code to your website, otherwise Private posts are visible to higher level users only (admins etc).

Example of code to allow subscribers to see Private posts: https://www.whitespider.ie/make-wordpress-private-posts-visible-subscribers/

You’ve asked in the Developing WP forum where solutions are often custom coded. You could assign a custom capability to certain roles or even individual users. Then build a custom page template that checks for that capability before outputting content.
