Support » Fixing WordPress » Create a new website from scratch without affecting original

  • G’day team,

I have just taken over my company’s WordPress duties, and during my off time I am going to begin building a new website from scratch, that I will then migrate to live.

I wanted to know the best way to begin building a whole new site from scratch (new themes, globals etc) without having any risk of touching the original website for the time being.

If I didn’t explain this well, please ask for anymore details that could help!

    Thank you 🙂

I want to build the new site using elementor if that helps

  • All you have to do is build the new site somewhere that’s not the same hosting account as your live site, and when it’s ready you migrate it across to the live site.

You may also want to consider creating the new site under the same domain name as your current website to avoid any issue with different servers in future. last time when I was creating the new site under a different server, the migration gave me some headache as there are some configurations I need to do when I do the migration.

For example, if your website is abcbusiness.com, you can create a new directory and have wordpress installed in abcbusiness/new so this ensure you are using the same web hosting server and you do not need to purchase another domain name for now.

Just some of my thoughts, hope it helps.

Thank you for the tip! I’m a bit of a novice, do you mean create a new wordpress account completely?

    @websprout

Thanks for the advice! Same question to you, would you do this with a brand new account? Is that what you mean by create a new directory? And if not, how would I do this? Sorry for the beginner stuff, new to all this 🙂

    Hi,
You do not need to have a different account. You just need to login to your web hosting cpanel and create another new directory under the domain name called ‘new’ etc. Then after that, install wordpress in the ‘new’ directory. You can check with your hosting provider if you need help on this, I am sure they will be able to assist.
    Hope this helps!

    Just to be sure…

When you say “new account” do you mean a new WordPress.COM account??? Or a new hosting account?

If it’s a new hosting account, most likely not. Most hosting services will let you host multiple domains from one account. To find out how you should talk to your hosting company.

If you mean a WordPress.COM account, you will need to ask there. WordPress.ORG is not the same thing, and no one here can help with that.
