• I would like to create a Tasting Notes section on my blog and I am not sure where to start. I basically need to list alcoholic drinks, which are divided into categories and types. So each category could have drinks of various types, and each type could be in each category. Also I would like to have several attributes of each drink and a photo. I would like to write my tasting notes for a drink but also let readers to leave their own notes and ratings.

If you take wine, for example, then the category could be Red, White and Rose, types could be dry, semi-dry, fortified, dessert and attributes would include region, name of the winery, type of the grapes, bottle volume etc.

The readers should be able to search/filter the drinks by category, type or any of attribute(s).

I just have no idea how to start. I guess I need to use a plugin but I am not sure what type. So any advice or pointer in a right direction is really welcome.

  • You can use pages and the Parent Page attribute to accomplish this.

    1) Create a page for the drink by clicking Pages > Add New. On this page, type in your tasting notes and add an image for the drink. Use the name of the drink (e.g. Yellowtail Sauvignon Blanc) for the page’s title. Publish the page.

    2) Then, create a page for the type by clicking Pages > Add New. On this page, insert links to the drink pages that you created above. Use the type name (e.g. Dry) for the page’s title. Publish the page.

    3) Then, create a page for the category by clicking Pages > Add New. On this page, insert links to the type pages that you created above. Use the category name (e.g. Wine) for the page’s title. Publish the page.

    4) Now, go back to the drink page (e.g. Yellowtail Sauvignon Blanc), and, in the Document settings on the right, set Page Attributes > Parent Page to be the drink’s type (e.g. Dry). Click Update to update the page.

    5) Then, go back to the type page (e.g. Dry) and set Page Attributes > Parent Page to be the drink’s category (e.g. Wine). Update the page.

Only the top-level pages (e.g. Wine) will appear in your site’s navigation. Users who go to this page can follow the links you to your type and category pages.

If you wish, you could create a page called e.g. Tasting Notes to be the Parent Page of the categories.

You may also wish to use a plugin to automatically generate links to the child pages for you, instead of having to insert the links manually in steps (2) and (3).
