    Hi,

I tried to convert my site from a working single site to a Network of sites. I thought I’d followed the directions, but I seem to have missed something critical. I’d like to get things back to working as a single site so I can try again, but I seem to be stuck with “Error establishing a database connection”.

I followed all the instructions on the WordPress site (or so I thought). I got to the point where I needed to log out and back in, and I got the error mentioned above.

I restored my wp-config.php and my .htaccess files from backups, but I still get the above error.

Can I just reinstall over the old installation and use the existing database to restore my site? Is there any other method I can pursue to put things back as they were, or at least recover my posts from the existing database?

  • Did you make backup of Database before you started converting to multisite if so you can use that to reinstall.

    Fixed.

I restored my MySQL database and the wordpress directory from backups, and the site still showed the same error: “Error establishing a database connection”.

For some bizarre reason, the wp-config.php file did not get restored when the rest of the directory did. Permissions are 755. No idea why. Commenting out the Network/Multi-Site code fixed the issue.

I knew the old “Did you backup your database” was going to be the first thing out of anyone’s mouth on this thread. I’ve installed two separate database backup plugins, neither of which gives me the option “Back up database now” so I’ve never backed up my database becasue I don’t know how and the plugins dont tell me how. My site has crashed too, for some reason. I was updating Symposium and it just crashed my site won’t let me into my own dashboard. What do I do about that? Anyone? I said NO, I’ve never been able to “backup my database” using WP plugins. Any OTHER suggestions?

You can export your database by logging in your host and go phpmyadmin and click export tab.
