CPT Taxonomy not a checklist?

Hello support,

When I create a new post, instead of the CPT taxonomies being listed as a check list on the right hand side of the editor, I have to type the taxonomy, in the same way I would add a tag. This will be confusing for my user because they could type whatever they’d like there – mispell things or whatever, and the post won’t display in the archive correctly. Is this a bug or is this by design?
