Coupon codes are randomly being generated in WooCommerce > Marketing > Coupons.
We don’t have any other coupon generating plugin.
As far as I can tell, these coupons are never being used. We don’t have that many orders yet.
We have a plugin that tracks the history of the site – logins, plugin updates, etc. It does not have any record of these coupons being created. But when we manually create a coupon, it does have a record of it.

    Hello @gretchen05,

    Thanks for contacting WooCommerce support.

I understand on your WooCommerce site, you are seeing coupon codes being generated automatically that you are not creating yourself.

To understand your site properly, could you please share with us the necessary information below for us to investigate the issue further:

    • System Status Report which you can find via WooCommerce > Status > Get system report > Copy for support.
    • Fatal error logs (if any) under WooCommerce > Status > Logs.

You could copy and paste your reply here or paste it via https://gist.github.com/ and send the link here.

Once we have this additional detail we’ll be in a better position to advise further.

    Thanks!

    Hello gretchen05,

    Thank you for your reply.

I have reviewed the SSR and error log you shared and found nothing odd.
    This problem is quite strange.

The WooCommerce auto-generates coupons when we click the “Generate coupon code” button.
But that code is designed to be alpha-numeric with capitals letters only.

Are you using the coupon feature at the moment?
If not then I suggest turning it off at WooCommerce → Settings → General.
Then monitor the website for any other issues.

I suggest you create a staging site, where you can perform the Conflict Test.
That will clarify what is causing this problem.

Looking forward to your response. 🙂

    Best regards.

@doublezed2 Thank you for your response! I’m sorry for my delayed response. Lots of things going on.
We already have a staging site. I will check with the company to see if they are okay to turn off coupons.

On the staging site there were three random coupons generated. That was before we went live with the production site. No more have been generated since then.

I will begin troubleshooting by turning off plugins. It almost seems like it is being triggered by actual orders but that is just a hypothesis for now.

    Hello gretchen05,

    Thank you for your reply.

That is completely fine, we are here you for your support.

I am glad to know that you already have a staging site.
It will help us with troubleshooting more effectively.

Here are a few points that you can focus on:
1- What is the behavior of the staging site with only the WooCommerce plugin and a default theme like Storefront?
2- What triggers automated coupon creation? Is it placing orders or visiting the site that triggers it?
3- Ask your hosting for malware scans.

Let me know about your findings. 🙂

    Best regards.

Thank you so much for your help!

The staging site has had the same set up as the live site and no coupons are being generated. But they were generated previously when we were testing orders on that site.
As long as no orders are being placed, no additional coupons are being generated.
Malware scans with my site host are premium. I just did a WordFence scan and everything looks good.
Even when coupons were off, the random coupons were being generated. When I turned it back on, new ones were there.

    Hi @gretchen05,

Sorry to hear that this issue persisted even on your staging site.

If I understand you correctly, the coupons were generated only when making orders? Is that correct?

Could you please confirm to only have a single user as the admin of the site, as this issue is quite unusual. Also, on your staging site, do you only have WooCommerce and a default theme as the only active plugin and theme respectively? Are there any custom codes used in your staging site?

    Thread Starter gretchen05

    (@gretchen05)

The coupons are only being generated when orders are placed. We have a activity monitor so we know what all admins are doing on the site. No one has been adding coupons. If we deactivate all plugins except for woocommerce, we can’t place an order because there is no payment processor. So we can’t really test without that since the coupons are being generated with orders.

Yes, there are custom codes used on this site but none that directly affect coupons.

    (@gretchen05)

I deactivated all the plugins and left only woocommerce, added a test payment method. No random coupons were generated with an order. I will recheck by reactivating other plugins one at a time.

    Hello gretchen05,

    Thank you for your reply.

I think that is good news or at least a step towards a solution. 🙂
Before you activate plugins, make sure to place several orders just in case.

May I ask which payment method you have activated for now?

Let me know about your findings after performing the test.

    Best regards.

    (@gretchen05)

I just chose collect payment on delivery. But I have since activated all of the plugins and there have been no coupons generated. It might by our payment gateway, which is Ebiz.

    Hey, @gretchen05!

You are correct, if the issue only happens if you use Ebiz, it is probably it that is causing the issue.

have you reached out to their support so they can take a look? 😃

    Have a wonderful day!
