Coupon “test” is letting users bypass checkout

Hi –

I have a WooCommerce site. I’ve never used coupons before, however I added a coupon field in the checkout. I noticed when someone types “test” in the coupon field, it’s letting them bypass the checkout and get the item without paying. I don’t recall ever adding a coupon called “test” so I’m not sure how this happened.

This is interesting and at the same time worrying 😒

How did you add the coupon field on checkout? Did you use a plugin or custom coding?

To avoid problems, until you can figure out what’s causing this, I would use the default coupon function and let customers add a coupon code on the cart page.

In the meantime, you can set up a staging site to test the coupon field in the checkout. Use the free WP Staging plugin to duplicate your site.

Could you also share a link to your checkout page and a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

Apologies for the late reply.

I thought the coupon field was part of the standard WooCommerce plugin. We didn’t add any plugin for this, so if not, it must be custom.

I have created a set of test credentials for you to see what I mean. Users on our site must be members in order checkout. Let me know how I can send you those.

By default, if a customer enters a coupon code that doesn’t exist in WP-Admin > Marketing > Coupons, they should get an error message:

If your checkout page doesn’t respond as expected, you’ll want to check to see if the issue is coming from a plugin/theme conflict. The best way to determine this is to temporarily switch your theme back to Storefront and disable all plugins except for WooCommerce. If that resolves the issue, then re-enable plugins one-by-one until you find the one that’s causing the conflict.

If you don’t want to test on your live site, you can create a staging site using a plugin called WP Staging: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-staging/
