Counting Recipients

I have a checkbox list of recipients. If they’re box is checked, then they are added into the to: list to recieve an email. Is there any way to count how many checkboxes are checked (recipients) and store it in a hidden field?
I’ve tried to do this a couple different ways. The most recent being to add in a bit of Javascript that counts the checkedboxes and stores it as a variable. The only problem is getting that variable into a field in CF7 seems impossible…
