My Multisite has been down for three days. I’ve experienced problems with the wp-config.php file suddenly turning into a blank page. The hosting company says there there is a table error of some sort that won’t repair, so they are supposed to be reloading a good backup of the database from earlier this week.

But they have supposedly done this and they are looking at the error log.

Of the last 300 error log entries, most resemble this:

    `[Sun Mar 13 19:14:16 2011] [error] [client 173.192.238.41] (12)Cannot allocate memory: couldn’t create child process: /opt/suphp/sbin/suphp for /home/blogpeor/public_html/index.php’

They’ve been trying to figure it out for the past three hours.

    Some direction would be helpful.

Sounds similar to this problem: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/cannot-allocate-memory-error?replies=11

Did your host, perchance, upgrade something?

I instructed them to try to upgrade to WordPress 3.1, but they told me they would not attempt to upgrade until after they got the site working by restoring to a known-working database.

I passed along your reply and the link to the previous case.

Judging by past behavior, they will send be a reply in two hours telling me they left a note for someone to look at it.

My site has been down for three days as they “look at it.” I cannot even get a straight after as to whether or not they actually even tried to restore to the older data base yet.

And this is why YOU should make your own backups. Not all hosts are johnny on the spot :/

    What d***s.

In all fairness. This database is a nightmare. This WPMu installation started with a release candidate. I started letting friends and associates create their blogs when it will still to buggy for a real production site. I neglected upgrading for YEARS. I’ve had to go through it table by table to get rid of spam users. I had turned new registrations off more thna a year ago. But About a month ago, soemthing happened spam users started created new blogs and i never noticed. Right before this happened, i saw there was about 125 PAGES of blogs. Before I could clear them out, this nonsense started happrning. There are about 3 pages of valid blogs, most of which are not updated by their users.

One of the reasons I didn’t do my own downloads was that downloading a database took close to forever, and strained the resources of the server. So I relied on the hosts’ backup.

I’m going to migrate this site over to a VPS at the end of the week.

    Thanks for the advice.

If you have THAT many splogs, I’d kinda be inclined to say EFF IT! and start over.

Export the blog data from the ones you want to keep and dump the rest.

You are not going to believe this:

They apparently totally deleted the original database.

They are apparently restoring backup versions, but they are restoring them under different names.

wp-config.php points to the database under its original name, username and password, a datebase that NO LONGER EXISTS.

I just now sent them a friendly email suggesting this might the cause of the “unable to establish a database connection message I’ve been getting four four days.

Okay … so point to the new database name.

My words exactly. They have since gone back to the original name …

I meant you could edit your WP-config.php and point to the new DB. 🙂
