This error indicates that UpdraftPlus (via WordPress) does not have write access to the indicated directory.
You will need to check the file permissions for the ‘wp-content/gallery’ directory, and ensure that WordPress has read/write access.

Smashing Magazine has a clear guide on the necessary file permissions and ownerships required for WordPress:

I have the same error now for some reason in-spite of having used this plugin for years. Exactly what file permissions are required for an Updraft backup? I could not determine this from the article you cited.

UpdraftPlus needs read and write access to the directory:

    • Files should be 664
    • Foldes should be 775

You will also need to check that the server user account that PHP runs on is the owner of the directory/files (or is part of the same group as the owner account). Your hosts should be able to help you determine the ownership and permissions
