    Every now and again I have a failed order. If I go to the order page, order details just says, “Could not process order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.”

    That doesn’t provide me with much information.

    Is there a way to find out more? I’d like to know what’s happening here.

  • If you open the order and look on the right hand side there’s notes. They tell you why the order failed. It’s usually because, for eg, someone tried to pay via Credit Card and they had insufficient funds, or the same with PayPal.

    Yes, there are notes.

    They say this:

    Could not process order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.

    There’s nothing else there. There never is anything else there. That’s all I ever see under “Order Notes.”

    Does that happen with a specific payment method? If yes, which payment plugin are you using?

    Specific payment method? I have no idea. I only accept PayPal and credit cards through PayPal.

    I’m using the Woocommerce PayPal Payments plugin.

    It would be nice if “the payment was declined” or “the payment didn’t go through” was specifically stated somewhere on the order page.

    A status of “failed” isn’t very descriptive.

    I guess the information that I’m looking for isn’t actually presented anywhere.

    Typically, when an order is failed, you can see the reason why the payment didn’t go through under Order Notes. https://woocommerce.com/posts/understand-and-fix-failed-order-status-in-woocommerce/

    I’m using the Woocommerce PayPal Payments plugin.

    There is a separate forum support for PayPal Payments. You may want to ask directly on their support forum – they should be able to clarify better: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/woocommerce-paypal-payments/

    Can we re-open this thread? This is a serious issue related to the “Woocommerce Paypal Payments” payment gateway plugin. The error is random and the plugin provides very little logging. There is no reason for why the card is declined, it literally only says “Could not process order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.” in the order notes. This happens multiple times per day and is costing us $.

    Yes this is an issue for me too. I am using the same Woocommerce Paypal payments allowing Credit Card and Paypal payments. It would be nice to know more than:
    “Could not process order. Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.” It says absolutely nothing else.

    NOTE: the solution is NOT TO CANCEL the payment if the card vault is not saved. So consider if that is ok for you. ALSO IF the Plugin team is reading this: please add a checkbox option “Accept subscription payments even if card vault is not saved by PayPal” for this so we don’t have to change the code. Most merchants are ok with this because they can just cancel the subscription service to the customer if the customer does not settle their payment on the next billing time.

    Same issue and the same error message, no information. Happening a lot, I’ve had about 15 failed orders in a week. All via Paypal. I’m fairly sure this is a known issue because there are a tonne of posts on this support page about it.

    In your thread, please include:
    1) A brief description of the issue
    2) A copy of your site’s System Status. You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it as a comment in your thread.
