Many thanks to the Gutenberg Team for providing this plugin, which is very useful to prepare existing websites for migration to the core version. However, what will happen upon release of the latter? Will the plugin have to be deactivated or deinstalled prior to migration, or will it simply merge with the core version?

Once WordPress 5.0 rolls out, the plugin will deactivate it self, you don’t need to do anything special. The plugin may be used to test new Gutenberg features after that though, we’ll see what happens as there’s no fixed plan beyond “you don’t need to worry” right now 🙂
