 * Hi, I was attempting to apply the Google Webmaster verification code to my site
which advised I apply it to the homepage.
 * I went into editor and dropped the ID code into the core functions source code
thinking it would be fine but now, my site will not even open and I can’t get
into the back end of my word press site to remove it!!! yikes…what now?!?
 * Please help!!! I’m having a baby next week so need to finalise things on the
   site before then 🙁

 * Can you access the site via cpanel (file manager) or ftp? You’ll need to do that
to remove the offending code. Google’s meta tag verification code should go into
the header.php not the functions file. Or use one of the alternate methods like
adding an html file. Unless you know what you’re doing, don’t mess with functions.
   php!

 * Thanks for the response…how do I get to that area? Had a feeling I should have
pasted it into heading.php but thought I was being clever :/ …I only know how
to login into my wordpress desktop and then get to editor from there…?

 * You did a very similar thing to this user who is also experiencing the same problems.

 * The easiest option probably is to log into your hosting account and look for
cpanel/plesk or file manager (depends on host). Ask the host if you can’t find
it. Which host do you use?
In the file manager you’ll see the directory structure
of your site – it looks like windows explorer. Navigate to functions.php and
remove the bad code you added. If it’s not available in your hosting account,
download filezilla, get your ftp credentials from the hosting account and in “
site manager” add your site. You’ll see the site’s directory structure again.
