Support » Themes and Templates » Coraline Scrolling Header?

  • Greetings,
    I am working on my first website and I know absolutely nothing about php or CSS (this is the reason I’ve chosen WordPress – because I thought there’s no need to know those things).
    I’m using the Coraline theme (v 1.4.1) and WP version 3.5.1
    I’d like to have either a PowerPoint style header image or a sliding header to display different pictures of the same size.
    I’ve installed multiple plugins (Cimy Header Image Rotator, Header Image Slider, Content slider, Nivo Jquery, etc.), followed all the steps, modified countless .php codes, and none of them have worked with my theme. I do not want to change theme (as this is for someone else who loves the theme).
    I’d like to have the page links in the same location (above the images, but have the images on the home page change. Would anyone happen to know a code or another method to get any header image slider to work? I need help in simple, laymen steps ☺
    Thank you so much for your time and knowledge.

  • Make a child theme ( for Coraline theme as parent )

    1. Reinstall the original unedited Coraline theme.
    2. Install your child theme, activate and make sure it works.
    3. Copy over header.php from Coraline theme, put into your child.
    4. Delete everything inside <div id="branding"> and its closing </div>
    5. Put the template tag (code) from the slider plugin in there.

    Thank you for your help.
    I’ve followed the steps to create a child theme, but I receive a message that states, “The parent theme is missing.”

    What is the parent theme and where do I insert it.

    The parent theme is the regular Coraline theme – sounds like you need to reread the link about and make sure you followed the instructions correctly. Your child theme style.css file should not be a copy of the entire style.css file.

    Okay, now we’re getting somewhere 🙂 Thanks.
    I’ve followed the directions and after the child theme was created, the site still functions perfectly.

    I’m using Cimy Header Image Rotator, and after inserting the code, no images appear at all. Its a white space where the images once were.

    Thanks for your patience with me.

    So now that we have something like this in header.php of your childtheme.

    <div id="branding">
    	<?php some_slider_plugin(); ?>

    It’s just a matter of configuring plugin settings and upload images. Read the plugin’s documentaion.

    This is what my child theme header.php file looks like from <div id=”branding”>…

    <div id="branding">
    				// Check to see if the header image has been removed
    				if ( '' != get_header_image() ) :
    					// The header image
    					// Check if this is a post or page, if it has a thumbnail, and if it's a big one
    					if ( is_singular() && has_post_thumbnail() && ( /* $src, $width, $height */ $image = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id(), 'post-thumbnail' ) ) && $image[1] >= HEADER_IMAGE_WIDTH ) :
    						// Houston, we have a new header image!
    					else : ?>
    					<img src="<?php header_image(); ?>" width="<?php echo get_custom_header()->width; ?>" height="<?php echo get_custom_header()->height; ?>" alt="" />
    				<?php endif; // end check for featured image or standard header ?>
    <?php endif; // end check for removed header image ?>
    <!-- #branding -->
    </div><!-- #header -->
    <div id="content-box">

    So excited! I spent some time pasting the code in different locations and deleting some code that was in the header.php file.
    It works beautifully now.

    Thank you for all your help and guidance. You guys are awesome.
