Support » Fixing WordPress » Copying WP site from one server to another

  • Hi, I currently have a wordpress site running and have purchased a new domain and want to have it running on there, how can I do this? Is it as easy as just copying it over? or do I have to install and make the site from scratch? Thanks.
This is my current site: http://amendoeirasemflor.com/wp/

    follow this guide Moving WordPress.

Be sure to read carefully and if you are not sure what to do just ask πŸ™‚

Thanks Keith, will do if I get stuck πŸ™‚ Thats just what I was after.

Hi, I have now done this and it seems to have worked well but I am having a few link issues:

    http://www.almondblossom-rentalvillas.com/

This is the new site, if you click on ‘Special offers’ it does not work, dont know why? I have checked the link and it is correct? Any ideas? Thanks πŸ™‚

Can anyony offer any help? Very confused why this is the only link that does not work? Thanks

After getting a 404 error I did a search for the page ‘special offers’ and though it did come up in the results I could not access it. I wanted to make sure it still exists.

To fix the menu issue I would just edit the menu item under appearance > menus and delete the special offers link. Save the menu. Then add the special offers page back to the menu from the list of available items on the left and save again πŸ™‚

    Thanks Keith

The page does exist: http://www.almondblossom-rentalvillas.com/special-offers which is why it is odd that it is not showing up.

I had to edit the entire menu in the transfer, and it does not show where you suggest, I have to get to it by going to ‘Appearance’ then ‘Editor’ then select ‘header.php’ and edit that. It is the same as all the other links so really dont know why it is not showing? Thanks for the help πŸ™‚

Could you copy the menu code block from header.php and post it?

    Yes, it’s here:

    Hi dbphoto1981,

You could try amending the Permalink settings, however, I’m not sure that doing this will solve the issue as there seems to be something adding the %E2%80%8E to the end of the special-offers address.

To do this as a test, go to Settings > Permalinks, select one of the other options available, save it and then revert to what you had first and save it again. This will refresh the Permalinks and might be a good test to start with.

As mentioned, however, there may be something a little deeper to look at. I have seen something similar before when moving from one server to another that downloading the database sometimes adds extra information onto some of the links.

To investigate this, you could open the database you transferred originally in a text editor. Then, search for ‘almondblossom-rentalvillas.com/special-offers’ (using either CTRL+F or CMD+F on a MAC) and see if there has been anything added to any of the special-offer links. If there has, delete it and reupload the database.

*****Obviously, make sure you have a backup taken of the database first******

Its something worth looking at as it is how I have resolved similar issues before.

Best of luck and remember the database backup πŸ™‚

    Thanks Damien

I’ve done the permalinks but no luck πŸ™

I still cant see why this would be, in the move, NONE of the links updated on that so I did them all manually so cant see why it’s just that one that does not work, I guess I can try the database route and see how I go. Thanks for the help and if you think or know of anything else let me know. Cheers πŸ™‚

Yep. @damienoneill2001 is correct about the source of the issue. “I’m a PC” so if I right click the link on your homepage and copy the link address, then paste it, it adds the additional characters. I would just copy my entire header.php into a new text doc (I use notepad ++), delete and re-type the line with the problem link in it. Save. Upload.

BTW, It’s awesome to see somebody using image maps within WP! I don’t see that 2much. It’s old school πŸ™‚

Ok, I’ve just tried swapping contact us link with the specials link, and when the specials are on contact it works fine, but if I put contact onto specials, it does not work!? it is something to do with just that link/icon, very confused and not sure what to do.

Keith, just tried what you suggested but i’m not getting the additional text?

Thanks on the old school! It wasn’t me that started the site i just took it over but like that it’s old school, brings back memories! πŸ™‚

Ok, got it, there was a ‘?’ when I brought it into my text editor (Crimson) so removed it and it’s working fine!!! Thanks guys, always something simple! πŸ™‚
