copying themes to experiment

  • How can one copy a theme and rename it?

My goal is to copy the default theme and experiment with styling it. I’d like to rename it so I know which one I’m editing.

I’ve tried copying and pasting within my directory (/themes), but the presentation shows up as blank in the themes page and when it’s activated.)

Also, Is this acceptable practice? I don’t intend to try to sell it, of course; not my line of business at all. Nevertheless, if it impinges on the original designer’s rights, I’ll find another strategy, altogether.

    Thanks.

  • Hi

At the top of the CSS file in every theme are some comments lines. One of them is the name of the theme – that is where WordPress finds the theme names. So, in your copy of the theme, change the name to something else. Then WP will see them with two different names.
