Support » Installing WordPress » Copying public_html to the same site, different domain

Long story short: I needed to change my domain name. I went into the old site and under Home I created a backup directory to copy the current public_html into.Bluehost used the new domain name I bought and replaced the old domain name with the new domain name. Before that, I made a backup using a plugin of my whole site.
Now, I have the renamed site but it looks like a file directory. I wanted to back up public_html to my local hard drive but didn’t figure out the right path name to do that. So, I have the old public_html under Home but I assume that with the new domain name, the whole directory was replaced. I am at a loss now how to restore the old public_html files. Would I go to the backup that is now in Dropbox and try to find it there?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi James,

Thanks. I read through that. I don’t have two domain names under my home directory. What I have is a copy of the old public_html file for the old domain name and the public_html for the new domain. It looks like, from what I’ve read, that I can copy the files from the old public_html to the new public_html. I have two questions then:
    1. Replace everything in the new domain’s public_html or only some of it?
    2. I brought images into my site before changing the domain name but I don’t see those in images in either public_html. When I go to the site domain, there are definitely images missing. Do I need to bring those into my WP site again?
I am not clear on what to do in the new public_html after the copy. My site URL is already the new domain. I’ve looked at videos and read documents but they didn’t answer these questions. It reminds me of my programming days when the doc said, “Do this” without giving the needed details. Thanks.

    1. If you’re moving the whole site, then move all the files.

    2. Are there image files under /wp-content/uploads/?

Thanks, James. I am not moving the site. I bought a new domain name and asked Bluehost to change the primary domain name. Otherwise, everything is still on the same site and file structure.

Yes, there is content in wp_content in both the old and the new upload folder. I have a picture of myself, which does show up but the banner-sized picture I had on the home page does not show up. When I go to the site, I can’t really tell that the Divi Influencer theme is there nor any rows I created. There is simply my photo. I copied all of public_html from the old version to the new version. Nothing changed. The site knows that the theme is Influencer but I can’t tell that from what I see. Suggestions please? Thanks.

Did you follow the steps exactly at https://wordpress.org/support/article/moving-wordpress/ including changing the WordPress and Site Addresses at Settings > General?
