• I am the webmaster for our church, and the WordPress site is in dire need of update. Several months ago I backed up the database and files from the production site, set up a new copy of WordPress on the server, and imported the database and all the files.

Since then I have added and configured a new theme, added a number of new pages and graphic files, and worked the development site into a shape I am happy with.

While all this was going on, the production site was still being updated, of course. Now I would like to export from the production site just the posts and images that were added after I set up the development site, import them into the development site to bring it up to date, then move the dev site back to the root web directory of the server to make it the new production site.

Is there a way to do this? Or am I asking for trouble, and would it make more sense simply to stick to the current production site and replicate the theme and other changes I made while in the dev site?

    Thanks…

    JGB

  • You can export your posts/pages using the export tool and limit the dates.

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Tools_Export_Screen

Then, use the importer to import to dev. site that content. While doing that, tell folks to not add any additional posts (or switch them to a role that cannot post during this time).

Note: if you have new site users of late on live site, they are not exported. On import, if the author does not exist on other site, you will have to assign to another user (unless you manually create on the other).

On the flip side, you can manually transfer your Parent and Child Themes (you did not edit the Parent Theme, right?) from dev. site to live site, then export your pages or posts (by date) to there.

Me? I would lock down the live site, make sure all ‘content’ (new and old) is at dev site with new theme, then manually make that the live site.

I have the exact same issue as @meatbrain.
My test or development site is on a different server and is using a different database name.
Will the export / import work in my case?

    Would appreciate any advice…
    thank you.
