I have always used classic editor with PageBuilder. Now I have decided to use blocks since classic editor now has a limited lifespan. I uploaded the plugin ‘convert to blocks’ thinking I would just see the normal pagebuilder rows and columns in the back end, and then blocks inside of those fields.
However, the block I see is just one block of code in the back end in custom html mode.
What is the process to preserve the pagebuilder layout?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

OK Success. Thank you. I hope this thread will be helpful for others as well.

It’s comforting to know that even though I disabled the classic editor the front end of the other pages remains the same, and it isn’t until I go into each page… revert it to editor, delete the content and save, that each page converts to blocks. Saving and importing the json file works as it should.

Very nice. Thank you so much.

There seems to be one issue. It appears the convert to editor step destroys the rows and column I had set up in page builder completely so that when I turn classic editor back on, I can no longer edit it in classic editor with the way it was set up before in page builder. Activating page builder just creates one row and column. And…. the content box is empty. Reverting to editor restores the content, but is there no way to use page builder in blocks? When I use ‘edit in blocks’ there is no page builder fields and the content is all in one block. Hmmm.

Update: Ha, discovered the edit layout mode. But not sure what that does for me since the preview layout mode is still all in one block – so if I increase the width of a column and save, nothing happens.

Reverting to Editor and back to Page Builder won’t break the layout; something else needs to take place. Has the page previously been saved in the Block Editor?

    Likely.

I am working to add the rows and columns back to this page in classic mode to restore it.  Will try another page afterwards without saving in blocks first.

It would be best to use the page revisions system to restore a version prior to the page being saved in a Classic Block in the Block Editor.

If Revisions aren’t visible you can click Screen Options top right to display them. Hopefully, they’re in place.

I have done the process with a new page. I deactivated classic editor, reverted the page to editor, deleted the content, saved, uploaded the json file. I see the page builder layout with my row and 2 columns. So I’m by default in block mode. How can I go back to turn on classic editor without doing a save?

Update. Just saw your post. How do I do this….

Are you able to use revisions? I would activate the Classic Editor plugin and then roll the page in question back to a date prior to the work discussed in this thread. You could then export the layout JSON file from the Page Builder tab.

I haven’t saved yes, but to answer your question, with the json file in place I CAN see the text there, but I will have to NOT save this and do it the way you are suggesting. Which I believe is revert to editor, delete the content, do a save. Then exit the page. Activate classic editor, then go in an add the json file while in classic editing mode. Is this correct?

Oh…. revisions…. one second. Let me check.

Yes, was able to restore via revisions, but now I’m simply back to the original classic view and the revert to editor option. This is for the fresh page I was attempting. For the other page I don’t know what revision would get me back to just before the save, but it’s ok on that page as I have redone it.

So if you can confirm the steps above I will reattempt it.

Are you trying to recover a Page Builder layout? If so, the page needs to be restored to a revision prior to saving in the Block Editor and then from there, the JSON file downloaded.

    Thread Starter FireFlyWebs

    (@fireflywebs)

At this point, no I am not trying to recover a page, but to convert one from the start using json file steps. I get to the point of having the json file loaded, but then I’m by default in block editing mode and you were saying that saving in this mode might be the reason the classic editor isn’t able to use the layout when I use the page builder option.

My understanding is that this is a recovery issue. You’ve gone to the Block Editor, inserted your SiteOrigin Layout Block and clicked Layouts > Import/Export. When importing the layout JSON file you’ve found that the layout is broken. Was the layout broken when you exported it from the Classic Editor Page Builder tab?
