I installed a clean WordPress site from scratch. I followed the 5 step thing because this is my first WordPress site.
The installation went fine and ended successfully. Or so it seemed.
When i try to use the admin console i get the white text on white background issue. I found in the forum that this can be fixed by changing the font colour in a css file.
A bigger issue is the following: When i go into “Themes” and try to change the current layout, or any other one, I get a screen with big buttons on the left that should let me control the layout and look of the site. It doesn’t. The buttons don’t react to input and the right side of the screen remains empty.
Also other elements of the site don’t function as expected. Checkboxes will change colour when selected but they don’t get checked! They do function as if they are selected so this is mainly a problem with the representation of the site.
i tried IE9, Google Chrome (current version) and Firefox 34.

  • For some reason the installation failed, the first clue is the white on white text on the first admin login. Yes this can be fixed, but at this stage you would be using the default theme, it indicates that the install went wrong somewhere.

At this stage the best thing to do is delete the files, delete the database and start again.

Does your web hosting have a “One click install”, called variously installatron or softalicious, both common accessories in cPanel.

Otherwise repeat the installation, follow “The carpenter’s rule” which is “Measure twice, cut once”, on the web this translates to “Read twice, click once”.

I will apply the carpenter’s rule although i don’t expect too much to change the second time around for it was a pretty straightforward install. I will let you know what the result is.

I installed WordPress again but now in version 4.01. This didn’t change anything. I then installed once again but now, and i hadn’t mentioned this before, in English instead of Dutch! It still doesn’t work in Chrome but now it does work in both Firefox 34 and Internet Explorer 10.

Are you still using the default twentyfourteen theme ? If not then restore your settings to use it.

Browser sensitivities like this are often a sign of a bad setting, this causes a syntax error which some browsers are able to recover from, while others don’t. So double check your settings in Dashboard > Settings > General, in particular that WordPress address and Site Address do not end in a ‘/’ and also don’t have any spaces or unexpected characters.

Look at the page header in firefox using firebug, check that the file paths are well formed.

It would help us help you if you posted the web address of your site.
