Also don’t want to have to add a read more link…if possible, I’d like to pull limited amount of content the way Genesis allows for content archives.
What you’re describing is an excerpt. You don’t have to provide a manual excerpt to all posts. If no manual excerpt is provided, WordPress generates one from the first words in the post.

If you’re not happy with your theme’s settings for the word limit or read more text, you can use the Display Posts parameters to build a different excerpt.

Thank you! For some reason WordPress is not generating the excerpt for me. It does work if I manually type in an excerpt on the post.
