• Both of the recent updates (4.0 & 4.0.1) failed to install correctly, stating that the old version (3.9.3) could not be removed and the plugin update failed.

As a result the existing contact forms no longer work. If I delete the plugin to re-install fresh, I assume the existing contact forms will be deleted along with the program files (?). Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

After looking a little closer, it appears that the plugin was de-activated during the update process. I re-activated the old version, and my forms are at least working again. Would still like to be able to update to the newest version though …

It is always possible that Contact Form 7 didn’t update correctly on your site. It’s a general problem with WordPress updates due to the unreliability of internet connections.

Delete the plugin folder at wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/ and install the plugin again.

This is not the case in my experience. The CF7 forms are not deleted if you delete the plugin folder using FTP.

Nevertheless I’d suggest you take a full backup including the database in case you have some other issues on your WP install.
