Hello! I have had an ongoing problem with one site that I manage (out of about 50 sites that I have WF installed on and it works well). More often than not, when I or my client try to access the WP login page, it doesn’t even allow us to try, we are automatically locked out. This happens even though I’ve added our IP addresses to the whitelist. Please help!

With my extensive experience with Wordfence, I know this is not normal, and I don’t want have to FTP into the site every time either of us wants to make an edit. 😉

The site is hosted at Bluehost. The unlock emails don’t come.

    Here is the exact message:

    You are temporarily locked out

You have been temporarily locked out of this system. This means that you will not be able to sign-in or use several other features that may compromise security. Please try back in a short while.

Return to the site home page
Attempt to return to the admin login page (you may still be locked out)

If you are a site administrator and have been accidentally locked out, please enter your email in the box below and click “Send”. If the email address you enter belongs to a known site administrator or someone set to receive Wordfence alerts, we will send you an email to help you regain access. Please read this FAQ entry if this does not work.

Thanks for including the domain name — I see that the server is running nginx. Is nginx set up as a reverse proxy? Or do you use any other reverse proxy such as Varnish?

If so, you will probably need to set the option “How does Wordfence get IPs” on the Options page. More details are included here:
    How does Wordfence get IPs

In this case, you will probably need to use the X-Real-IP option or X-Forwarded-For option. After saving the option, you can check on the Live Traffic tab, to see the IPs of visitors, to make sure they don’t show up with the wrong IP address. Even if Live Traffic is disabled, you should be able to see Logins and Logouts. Old visits won’t be fixed, but new visits should.

If that still does not fix it, let us know. I saw a similar issue with Bluehost, but it was a different server setup, so it might not be related.

Wow! I’m impressed with how quickly you responded! I’ve never set up nginx and honestly don’t even know what that is!

I manage 25+ sites at Bluehost, and have never had to set that up or edit it in any way! 😉

This site is set up on a dedicated WP server, using one of the “Optimized WordPress” plan.

Is that helpful or do I need to dig in and try to make changes to something?

Thanks SO much for the help!

Ah, ok! The Bluehost Optimized WordPress page tells me a little bit about their setup, but unfortunately not with enough detail.

On the Wordfence Options page, near the bottom, if you can click the link “Click to view your system’s configuration in a new window”, it will show you a lot of information about your server — if you could email that to me, I can see which option will work best, or if there is something else we need to do.

You can send it as a PDF, an html file, or by copying and pasting, if that works with your email client. If you can include a link to this post in the message, that will help too.

I received your email — it looks like you can just change the option “How does Wordfence get IPs” on the Wordfence Options page. Pick the option that starts with “Use the X-Real-IP HTTP header”.

After that, if you can log out and log back in (or log in using another browser), you should be able to see your own IP address on Wordfence’s Live Traffic page, on the Logins and Logouts tab.

Let us know if this helps, or if you have any additional trouble!
