Connect to a second database within wordpress

Hi!

I need to perform a connection to a mysql database which is not the wordpress database. I noticed that using the classic php connectionscripts gives sme some issues on wordpress plugin and comment system. Once I do a mysql_select_db(xxx, yyy) strange things do happen.
Do you have an idea how to do it? Cheers
