  • What the hell happened, Bad.Chife? I just had to remove Shareaholic from all my sites, as it suddenly killed my pagespeed from 95 to 50!! Do you know what has changed?

    Same here ! What a shame !
    This thing is a spyware/adware

Should be removed from wordpress.org directory !
Is there is a way to report this abuse ?

I’ve had enough of these free social sharing plugins. This is the third one that I have tried, and Shareaholic turned out to be the worst. They all start off innocent, and then suddenly, with an update, are injected with adware, malware and all sorts of junk that will not only kill your site speed but also annoy your readers. Once it happens, it can take weeks to clean up the mess. I know my way around WordPress, but I have still wasted the best part of a whole weekend cleaning up after the recent crap injected update. I’ve just paid $29 for peace of mind, and better functionally from a premium plugin.

    Hi All,

First of all, we sincerely apologize for this mix-up.

These ads are part of our site monetization toolkit that is meant to help you make money, and is an integral part of our service —

    https://support.shareaholic.com/hc/en-us/articles/207147336-Your-Options-to-Monetize-Your-Website-Earn-Revenue-with-Ads

These ads should NOT have turned on your website, unless you were already part of the monetization program.

It is likely that there were monetization settings that had been left turned on during your initial setup that would have caused ads to show up. The only way this would have happened is if a banner ad setting had been left turned on in your settings.

To access these settings, in your WordPress sidebar -> App Settings -> Monetization Button

We also sincerely apologize that the admin/setup interface wasn’t clearer (we’re working on this) and for any issues this incident may (and obviously did) have caused you… I know no words or apologies are enough. We would be pretty mad too if something showed up on our own site which we weren’t expecting — even if it was unintentional on our part or the partners.

Too late. I have found a social share button plugin that doesn’t screw my sites. I have now deleted all instances of Shareaholic, but I still have traces of your adware and malware infecting my sites. As I said, too late. The damage is done!

@bobsled We understand. Will continue to work hard on earning back your trust.

As soon as you uninstall the plugin, all traces of Shareaholic code should be gone. The simplest way to check is to “view source” and ensure “shareaholic.js” is not included in your HTML code. If you’re running a caching plugin (like W3 Total Cache), make sure you clear its cache so that it picks up the updates, otherwise it may continue to serve cached pages that may include “shareaholic.js”

ps – This incident would have only happened if you already had ads enabled. Recommend checking your site earnings on Shareaholic.com regardless (no harm, only potential gain). You may have some monetization related earnings accrued.

Yeah, this is our fault that Shareaholic got some money showing ads to our visitors.
