Confusion with WordPress Installation instructions

I’m brand new to WordPress, so any confusion is mine, and I apologize in advance.
I read the instructions then downloaded and installed XAMPP to my computer. I installed WordPress into the correct folder and brought it up.

My current confusion is in the installation instructions (http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress).
Under Step 2, there are multiple instructions for creating a database/user (cPanel, LunarPages, phpMyAdmin, etc.) I assume I’m only following *one* of these sub-topics (in my case phpMyAdmin).
    1. Is this correct?
    2. If not, there are instructions for Using the MySQL client in this same section. If I’m NOT to follow the MySQL instructions since I’ve already done phpMyAdmin, how do I fix the error stating “Your configuration file contains settings (root with no password) that correspond to the default MySQL privileged account. Your MySQL server is running with this default, is open to intrusion, and you really should fix this security hole by setting a password for user ‘.root’.”
    3. Otherwise, where do I access the MySQL client? Is that simply the SQL tab?

    Thank you so much!

I should add that I only completed through step 2 (assuming I’m only supposed to follow ONE set of instructions in step 2.

If the answer is “continue to step 3” I’ll feel a little silly, but I’ll still appreciate your support.

    Again, Thanks!
