confused with categories

    I have a magazine I need to show on front page the categories: cover story, features, departments but I also need to mark them with publication date for example Fall 2012, Spring 2012. I will need to also pull just the Fall 2012 articles on a page for archiving to reference in those 3 categories as well.

    How would I go about that? I had set up my categories like this:
    Aurora

    • Spring 2012
    • Fall 2012
    • Cover Story
    • Features
    • Departments

    But when I pull the child of Aurora I get it all not just the newest cover story, features, departments. If I try to exclude a category I exclude the recent of cover story etc.

    I am just confused it seems. Can someone help me with organizing this?
