Confused by WP subscribe vs Mailchimp – pls help!

I’m new to wp.org but have had several wp.com blogs where subscribers could manage their preferences etc. I gather this is not on offer at wp.org.

I’ve been advised to use Mailchimp to capture email addresses, but this is not the same as subbing to a blog so you get an email every time new content is added.

Really, I would like both these functionalities in one plugin! Is that possible?

And if I decide to give up on Mailchimp and just invite people to subscribe to wp.org, which widget should I use?
