When I try to view the sitemap, activating the “See the XML sitemap” link (General > Features > XML sitemaps) I am directed to a url (http://<mydomain>/index.php/sitemap_index.xml) that produces a 404 error. The format of this url is in accordance with the permalinks of the site. However, the functioning URL of the Yoast sitemap is http://<mydomain>/sitemap_index.xml. I am under the impression that the sitemap works. Following instructions I have gone to the Permalinks page and re-applied the settings—without effect.
Also when I view the sitemap and click on any link, a 404 error is produced.
Can I ignore this issue?

If you continue to receive the 404 error after resetting the permalinks, we would then also suggest adding a set of rewrite rules to your server and we have a guide on adding these for an Apache servers here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/xml-sitemaps-apache/ and for Nginx servers here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/xml-sitemaps-nginx/.
