Conditional CSS on Small Calendar

My customer has requested a different background depending on the category of event for that date. I see the line in calendar-small.php which sets the class to “eventful” or “eventless” but I need additional logic to determine which type of event is scheduled that date. Does the $calendar array return the event category?
