• Hi! I am trying to install WP on a Windows XP (Apache 2.0, PHP, MySQL 4.1 all configured as they install by default) machine, and everything looks fine up to step 3.
I have placed all WordPress files in htdocs/wordpress, which is where I want my WP site.
When I click step 3, after having entered http://localhost/wordpress/ as the address of my web site, the computer grinds to a near complete stop and I have to reboot. I can’t even get the task manager on screen (ctrl-alt-delete)…
What can this be? I find nothing similar in the forums.

  • Have you set the .conf file in the apache setup ?

Well, that depends on what you mean. 😉 The .conf is set in such a way that PHP runs and that for example index.php works as DirectoryIndex. PhpMyAdmin works fine also. Is there something that I should do about the .conf file that is not mentioned in the installation instructions?

Just downloaded ‘wordpress-1.2-mingus’ and trying to install on Windows 98 (also Apache, PHP, MySQL 4.1 all configured as they install by default) and I am having the same problem as manne. Everything looks fine up to step 3 but when I click step 3, after having entered the address of my web site, my computer doesn’t crash but the installation sequence halts. How do I set the .conf file?
    Cheers!

Nobody who has anything on this? I would really like to try WordPress. ExpressionEngine installed just fine, so I don’t see any problems with my configuration.

I think I’m having a similar problem, I’m using freebsd-5.2.1 with the lastest cvsupped ports. Software wise I have php4-4.3.7_1, apache-1.3.31, mysql-server-4.1.2 and the same for the mysql client. I can get as far as the third step then it hangs. Top reveals mysqld is running at around 88-90% cpu usage on an athlon AMD-K7(tm) Processor (548.94-MHz 686-class CPU). It stays that high for about 3 minutes and then the install page reports that it’s already installed and to clear my old database files if I want to reinstall.
If I go to my url that I specified it shows the webpage just fine except for one error on multiple spots on the page:
“Database error: [Table ‘wordpress.wp_post2cat’ doesn’t exist]” with more output directly underneath it.
Check out http://www.pillo.org/wp/ for an example. I think the problem is with mysql, since we’re using alpha software when the wordpress docs specify mysql-323. I hope there’s a simple fix since I’m unable to deinstall 4.1 and install 3.23.

I’m having the same problem on an install on windows server 2003 with mysql 3.23.49 and php 4.3.3. It was all groovy until step 3 and then lockup. I’m not using Apache but IIS 6.0. It totally crashed my server. I also had issues with connecting to the database before step 1. I wonder if mysql is installed wrong. I can access it through other scripts on the same web site and create and manipulate data just fine.

I just uninstalled mysql 4.1 and installed 3.23 and it works flawlessly now.
