Complex Site, Need Advice on How To Build?? (7 posts)

    Hey WP, I have a rather complex website that I'm needing to build and have no idea where to begin...but here's my list, and I'd love some advice on what I should do to build all this and/or if WP is even capable of it?

    1. FashionShots "home page" as a splash page: Visitors click on the applicable icon to choose which division of the site they want to enter: FashionShots Boudoir, FashionShots Seniors, or FashionShots Models.

    2. Each division of the website has a similar feel in the design, but different colors and navigation specific to that division and they end up looking like 3 different websites, only I just have one admin area to maintain all of them. I was thinking of creating separate WP installs on different directories such as http://www.fashion-shots.com/boudoir, http://www.fashion-shots.com/models, http://www.fashion-shots.com/high-school-seniors, until I realized that would mean I'd have to edit 3 different websites at all times. Is there a way to have just one website that LOOKS like 3 different sites with different templates, but I just have one admin area to maintain all of them?

    Thanks so much for the help!!

    WordPress can do all that and much more. You just have to learn php, xhtml, CSS and a few others for a few years or more... Or go on Freelancer.com and pay someone.

    You could achieve that with 1 wp install.

    Agree with Pete, making this look good may be tricky for a beginner.

    If you are keen to try this yourself;
    - Learn how to create custom post types, for each of your different content types.
    - You may wish to use the Advanced Custom Fields plugin, to configure all the images/data collected for each post type.
    - Look at how you want to get these posts on different pages. Perhaps categories?
    - Once they are on different pages, you'll have to apply different css rules to each. This will be custom code.

    Ratz...so there's no way to do this with WP Multi-user sites or anything? Guess I'll just have to install multiple WP sites. :/ Thanks for the advice!

    Multi-site may well do what you want though whether it's the better solution is a different question - have you looked at this:

    I did look at the Multi-site thing and tried creating a network. Was able to get through the wp-config.php file set up then, couldn't find the .htaccess file anywhere in my folders...so I have no idea where to go from there. :/

    [EDIT] Just saw that link has some instructions on how to add the code if you don't have a .htaccess file...nevermind! I'll let ya'll know how it works out. Thanks again for the help! :)

    You can create one -- see step 3

    EDIT - ha, we crossed posts - glad you sorted that step anyway. Also notice that there is a specific forum for multisite, so that might have helpful info for you too. I can move this thread there if you need more help.
