I am about to completely change a very old website. it is already rank well on google.

It is HTML and I will change for a new one on WordPress (same host and domain), delete old and create a new.

I will installed YOAST but should I do something before the start for it doesn’t lose rank on google?

    Thanks.

  • Your question is probably outside the scope of Yoast

If you have pages ranking well then it is important that you create 301 redirects to the new URLs

A plugin like Redirection works fine – there are many similar.

…then read up as much as you can about setting Yoast up correctly – and understanding why those settings are important.

    Hi,

Yoast is not 100% able to guarantee no ranking loss when you make the switch. We can only say to make the switch and then monitor the results.

You may also need to make redirects using that aforementioned plugin. Note, that we also offer a premium plugin which permits you make to redirects: https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/

So on your staging site when you begin to make make new URLs in WordPress you can make redirects from those html ones to the new WordPress ones. It is OK if the staging site has a different domain than your live site. So long as the database is transferred when you make the change, all those redirects you made will appear and work on the live site.

Lastly, you will need to make the changes in Google Search Console by removing any non-Yoast sitemaps and adding the Yoast ones using this guide: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/submit-sitemap-search-engines/

    Thanks.

    Another question about another website:

This website is already index on google but it isn’t using Yoast and rank badly, Can I verify a new email with gmail by Yoast and start to fetch and remove URL, do general SEO from there? Do I have to take any action before because the website is already indexed?

    Thanks

While I am not sure what you mean when you say “Can I verify a new email with gmail by Yoast” as we do not offer email I do know that if you added in the redirects correctly, those old html URLs appearing in Google will eventually drop off in favor of the new page.

Using the remove tool won’t 100% help as it is not permanent. This guide explains more: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663419?hl=en.

OK. Sorry for the bad explanation.

I mean I have a website that is already indexed on google without using Yoast plugin.
Can I install Yoast and do SEO with this plugin?

You can use the Yoast SEO plugin if the site is already indexed in Google. Google re-crawls sites every few days and the optimizations you perform using the plugin will then be reflected in the search results.
