 * I am thinking about making some changes to the wordpress code. How do you think
I should compile and test my code afterwards so that I know what all is breaking
   due to the changes?

 * You don’t compile code–it’s PHP and you can use just a [text editor](http://codex.wordpress.org/Glossary#Text_editor)
to make changes to any script file that makes up WordPress.
 * Might look at [Intalling WordPress](http://codex.wordpress.org/Intalling_WordPress),
and the section on Installing WordPress on your own computer, to setup a test
   blog.
