Is there an official list anywhere of plugins that are compatible with multisite?

I know I can search by tag, but those aren’t vetted, right?

EDIT: Also, I have plugins from my single install that I’d like to bring over and have no way of knowing that they can handle multisite.

  • With over 17,000 plugins in the wordpress.org Plugin Repository alone, I seriously doubt it…

Right, but of those 17,000 plugins how many are actively being developed? Of those being actively developed, how many are getting more than a handful of downloads a month? Let’s not be silly about it. There are plugins that haven’t been updated since 2005 — I seriously doubt those even work with WordPress 3.3.1, regardless of the installation type.

I am not expecting an all inclusive list, but I am hoping to find a list of featured plugins (actively developed & popular) that do work.

how many are actively being developed?

Impossible to say. How do you define “actively being developed”? If a plugin remains compatible through multiple WP updates and, therefore does not need to be updated, should that imply that it is not being tested & maintained?

how many are getting more than a handful of downloads a month?

What does that have to do with anything? A plugin that effectively meets the needs of only 6 users a month is no less valuable than one that is downloaded hundreds of times a month. Niche plugins are no less valuable than their more common brethen.

I seriously doubt those even work with WordPress 3.3.1

You think? I’m using a plugin on my 3.3.1 sites that hasn’t been updated in almost 3 years. and it still works perfectly.

I am hoping to find a list of featured plugins (actively developed & popular) that do work.

And you’re not going to find one I’m afraid. As I’ve tried to illustrate, the reality is not quite as black & white as you seem to think. The only way to do this is to to start testing plugins manually in as many different server environments as possible. And then re-test them all every time there is a WordPress update.

Would you want to take that on? I know I wouldn’t 🙂

If they’re tagged multisite, or wpmu, then the author knows it works.

Otherwise, check and catch as catch can.

That’s what I was afraid of, Ipstenu. Thank you. It would be nice if there was a way to report this. I know people can report that something work with version 3.3.1, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it would work with multisite.

esmi, I think I’ve already said that I was not looking for a list of every plugin that works with multisite.

You seem to want to argue semantics for some reason I can not understand. Actively developed plugins are ones that are being developed (not tested) actively. Popular plugins are one that meet the needs of many (not six a month) users.

I was hoping (in vain apparently) that there was a list of perhaps the fifty most popular plugins that are multisite compatibly. I’ve gone to pains trying to illustrate that I am not expecting any one to test every plugin ever made, but you’ve continued to frame my question in an opposite light. If I sound a bit testy it is because you’ve gone out of your way to respond sarcastically to this fairly reasonable question. I don’t mean to be rude, but your responses just were not helpful.

If you can’t accept what I am saying I propose we just both accept that we don’t see eye to eye and happily move along.

‘Custom TinyMCE Shortcode Button’ plugin does not work with WP Multisite. If enabled, when the user click on Network Admin, they will get blank site (500 internal error page).
