Support » Your WordPress » Community Website – Mid-Century Modern Homes. Any suggestions?

  • I just created this community website last week and I would like your advise. This is my first WP website and it was hard for a newby like me. Check out some of the historical data I have received from our residents.

Would love and appreciate your feedback!

  • firstly, your blog is taking a lot of time to load, and i think the reason is mainly the bigger images that you have on the homepage. And you have quite a few of those images. So here are a few quick suggestions for the loading time.

    1) Keep 5+ posts on the homepage, your homepage scrolls a long way down.
    2) Your images are 1,024px × 795px (scaled to 640px × 497px). If you scale the images on the browser, it will affect loading times. I suggest you to keep images at a size of 500 * 500 pixels, that way it will load fast, and perhaps you can link the image to its original size. Make sure to re-size the images on your computer before uploading.

    3) You got a huge sidebar, that scrolls right at the bottom of the page. Perhaps you can remove the calendar etc. which are not all that important. Lower the number of feed items etc.

Here are some other suggestions that will make your blog look better and make it popular.

    1) change the permalinks to something friendly, the option is available in the settings/permalinks under wordpress admin panel.

    2) use some social media buttons, i see you have facebook buttons already, perhaps you should try twitter/digg/stumble etc. as well.

best of luck with your site, keep it updated,
    cheers,

    Healthvotes,
Thank you so much for the suggestions! May I ask how to keep only 5 posts on the homepage? How do I change this?

I’m not too familiar with permalinks. Would I need to change this for each item?

Thank you for the suggestions on the photo sizes. I currently have the res set at 200 and the width of 10. What do you suggest I cut down…the res or size?

Thanks again! I appreciate your advice!

From the log in==>Settings===>Reading==>Blog pages show at most
    change this to 5.

    As healthvotes said:

chane it to a custom structure like such:
    /%category%/%postname%/
that way instead of having dates and stuff in your url you get post/category names

Some of your images are really big – thewoodlandstamarac.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Magnolia1.jpg this will take a very long time to load and will thus make the entire homepage load slow. Perhaps you can lower its resolution, resize it locally on your pc/laptop.

@thebettertwin, has already replied, that should help. about the permalinks, perhaps keeping /%postname%/ alone should be good. and you just need to do it once and it will affect your entire blog.

    cheers,

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I reduced the brochure photos to 500px width each. Please try to give it a go and see if it loads easier for you now.

I was able to change the posts on each page too…thanks again. I need to change the permalinks now. However, before I do, will this affect the links that I’ve sent out to individuals directing them to a particular post? If so, I’ll have to wait before making another change so they can see that certain post.

    Thanks!

yeah, now your site loads a lot faster, about the permalinks, if you change it, it will affect every post,

for example your link, which is now:
    thewoodlandstamarac.com/2010/10/holly/

    will be like:
    thewoodlandstamarac.com/holly/

it will affect every post that you have…

Thanks for that html for the permalinks. I changed it to something simple so again, thanks for all the comments!

If there are any other bells/whistles that would make a great community website, please let me know. I already tried putting facebook login stuff and plug-ins and that was a major fail.

    Thanks for your suggestions!
