I created a site in the beginning of January about my local town, since then it has been developed extensively to be turned into a multi-author blog, and a non profit project for the local community.

One of the aims at the beginning was to create a large site that solely relies upon Open Source programs and plugins as a showcase of what can be achieved through the utilisation of Open Source.

Since the launch of the site, it has won a silver award from WSawards and a Better Net Award from Scotland Unltd and Nominet Trust

without WordPress and the work of all the programmers and plugin developers this site would have never been possible. Thanks everyone ;)

I just started a WordPress blog and after viewing your site http://www.lochgelly.org.uk I realize that is the same framework I am looking for. Would you be willing to point me in the right direction when it comes to adding a forum and user login? Those two are a must have for me.

Sorry for the late reply folks, I never realised anybody had replied to this thread.

The jijaybajy: I wish I could take credit for it but I can't, the theme is Mystique by Digital Nature, its the best free theme, I've ever used - http://digitalnature.ro/projects/mystique/

@ffleader: The custom login is part of the Mystique theme (link above). The forum is provided by WP Mingle Forum: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mingle-forum/

If you are willing to add a Social Network feature to your site, you can add the Mingle plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mingle/ that will provide you with a widget for the user login (you can view a demo at: http://fate.concepts.org.uk)
