Have been getting some comments that at first seem legit, but upon closer examination they seem like spam. They always have egregious spelling errors and list their site as yahoo.com. Here are some examples:
That’s really thinking out of the box. Tkhans!
SWhtKq Good point. I hadn’t tohguht about it quite that way.
What I don’t understand is, if they are spam, which I think they are, what is their purpose? What do they gain from it? Seems very strange. Maybe just testing akismet filters?
I bet those comments all have links to websites included with them? They’re just looking to get more links back to their own site (for search engine rankings).
I know they’re spam…. but there are no links to any sites, and no advertising… so what’s the point? That’s what I’m asking.
Have you gone right through each comment looking for links? Did the commenter complete the website field?
I too have been perplexed by this. Comments that have no links, don’t advertise anything, and really don’t say anything.
At least they used to try and sell you something, now it’s just gibberish.
Esmi, I said in my post that they list their website as yahoo.com
I guess either they’re testing or they’re bad/inexperienced spammers.
Yea. It’s interesting, the second example I posted has a pretty unique string… “SWhtKq”. But I searched google and didn’t find anything.
I suspect these are people or bots that are trying to get approved on sites with the hope of being able to get spam links approved later on.
Joseph is right. In your wordpress settings, there is the ability that once a comment is approved, it is no longer sent to the moderation box upon subsequent comments from that email. So, in essence, if you approve the comment, and they come back to the site and see its approved, as long as they use the same email address their comment will be auto-approved. I think. 🙂
