Comments post but content not visible

I am somewhat new to working with WordPress and have taken on the challenge of creating my own theme. However, I am having some trouble with the comments. The comments will post, but only the comments display, not the content (on the following page). I’ve tried a few fixes such as unchecking “break comments into pages” and various code modification to comments.php in my theme directory. Am I missing something simple?
