    Hello,

The website is barcampmilwaukee.org and I cannot get the comments to appear for the life of me. I have enabled them on the main settings and on the individual settings with no success. Any ideas?

  • So comments are enabled in the Customizer under Discussion Options and for the pages that you want comments on via WordPress? (See this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/) for turning on comments in WordPress.

Yes, both options are set to allow comments.

This is the page I want comments on. It is not linked in the menu because of the lack of comments.

Hmm. Can you send me screenshots of your settings regarding comments for all of WordPress, located in Settings > Discussion, the post, and Decode Customize > Discussion Options?

comments are not working on My blog either, since 4.0 was updated!

    Got it!

The issues was I had comments off in the theme customization settings. This is a unique location of this setting relative to other themes I have used. Perhaps note that somewhere.

    Thank you!

Perhaps I should, the option is enabled by default, so I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that any user would remember disabling them and where they did so.

    Couple points:

With many themes, people are used to enabling/disabling comments at Settings > Discussion and on a particular page or post.

Using your theme, I have the comments enabled at Appearance > Customization > Discussions Options, disabled at Settings > Discussion and enabled on the particular pages and posts. It isn’t the location that is confusing, it is finding the right combination that is.

In this case, I would recommend not even including the option at Appearance > Customization > Discussions Options, unless you have to or unless that is where WP is headed these days. It just adds one more switch that can be flipped or not.

I definitely see where you are coming from. I need to look into seeing if I can read WordPress’s settings for comments because I added this setting to make blogs that don’t use comments even lighter and faster.

Yeah, I get where your going. I have been using WP for awhile and a lot of functions are migrating to the theme customizations settings. The path seems to be add complexity on one level until it hits a breaking point, and then move to a new menu area (right now it is the theme customizations area) to get back to lighter and faster.

This is why I am not sure if I my recommendation is that way to go or if the times are just changing!

Thanks for Decode. It is an excellent light theme that functions well for events/conferences when most of the themes in this area are paid. As a suggestion for growing the use of your theme, I recommend taking features from sites listed here.

    Thanks again.

No, I totally agree with you. I’ve been realizing during this discussion that I was adding an additional level of complexity to this experience. I added this option a long time ago, back when I just wanted to kill comments on my personal blog. It may be time for me to remove this possibly redundant setting. I promise to take another look at this.

As far as adding features exclusively for events, I’d rather just integrate with a plugin or two like I’ve done with breadcrumbs. I believe themes should really only define the output of existing content, though I break this rule for Social Icons because almost everyone wants to add social icons to their blog.

Agree on not specializing. I just know your theme works very well for conferences/events!

    Cheers.
