Support » Fixing WordPress » Comments being entered without approval?

  • I have a site that doesn’t even have a blog on it, and somehow some spam comments are getting in my database. I don’t even have a form for entering comments in my theme. How are they leaving comments? It’s causing issues with my host.

Should I remove the 2011 and 2010 themes from the directory? Is there any other preventative measures I can take?

    Do you have comment forms?
Can you post a URL to illustrate the problem?

    How are they leaving comments?

By accessing the core comment functionality of WordPress directly. Try activating the Akismet plugin.

How are the accessing it directly? that seems like a security issue no? Can I prevent that at all? With file permissions or something?

Another one of my other sites I have comments enabled as well as askimet, but the spammers post so many that my host just shuts down my site. Askimet isn’t fully taking care of the issue.

Try IP blocking, blocking comments with certain key words or parts of it in the boxes in discussion settings.

that seems like a security issue no?

No. You control whether or not comments are published without moderation via Settings -> Discussion.
