For some reason as yet undetermined by me, whenever I attempt to edit a comment, my own or someone else’s, WP chugs to a halt, then serves up the theme 404 page.
And on the sixth or seventh try, eventually WP will give in and allow me to edit the comment. Is it just timing out? Is the fact that there are 38,678 comments in the database a factor? (Actually, about 10,000 were deleted as spam and such, but I assume they still occupy a few bytes in the database.)
