 * I am most certainly doing something incredibly stupid, but I can’t figure out
   what. I want comments on but currently it says: Comments are closed.
 * Any ideas?

 * Two things.
 * To make comments on by default for all new posts, go to Options » Discussion 
   and set the relevant options.
 * To turn comments on for a specific post, open the post for editing, then look
   in the right margin for a box that says “discussion,” and set the relevant options.
