You could try wrapping comments using this fucntion, so if a user is logged in, show comments and if not, do not display comments? Is that along the lines of what you’re looking to do?

Hope this helps.
Aloha Will, Mahalo (thanks) – yes – you’re on the right path. To secure things more, I decided to install a forum-style plugin. The solution you recommend is great if I had just one level of membership (guest / member). I realize I need something that’s member-access specific . . .
Thanks again for the post! I’ll tinker with user levels to fine-tune it even more 😉
Oh! Yes! Will – awesome website btw!
Bookmarked for later use 😉

How do I block guests (unregistered site visitors) from reading comments posted on members-only (registered member) posts.
After reading the codex, it appears this ability is not available.
Reviewing plugins, have yet to find a plugin that allows me to fine-tune who reads posted comments.
Suggestions?
