Comment Errors and Previews

  • I’d like to see better comment handling in WordPress. Right now, if I submit a comment to my blog with a required field left empty, I either get an ugly error page or I get an HTTP 500 error.

What I think would be handy is a Preview Comments function (that does not use AJAX or JavaScript, but instead works more like the Filosofo Comments Preview plugin), with an option to force users to preview their comment before submitting it. If the user leaves a required field blank and presses Submit, the blank field causes the Preview function to be run instead, with some red text next to the form input field saying (for example) “Valid Email Address Required.”

This would fix numerous usability issues when it comes to comments: it could help reduce spam; it allows users to preview a comment even with JavaScript turned off; and it provides better error handling.
