comment editing for group blogs

  • apologies if this has already been addressed. how does the new version of wordpress deal with comment editing in group blogs? in 1.5 someone who starts a top-level post can edit comments made by anyone to that post. what i am looking for is this functionality:

registered members should only be able to edit their own comments, regardless of whether they started the post being commented in or not. only the top level admin should be able to edit/delete all comments. unregistered members should not be able to edit comments.

does wordpress 2 have this functionality? are there plugins that do? i have the “edit comments” plugin for 1.5 but as i said, with this members can edit all comments made in top-level posts that they’ve posted.

  • As far as I know there is no such “Role” in WP 2.x that allows a user to edit ONLY his posts.
You can take a look at the ROle Manager plugin, but I don’t see anything like that in it.

thank you. does nobody seem to think that this should be crucial functionality for group blogs–to allow members to edit their own comments but not anyone else’s?

does nobody seem to think that this should be crucial functionality…

I don’t think so. People should think before commenting.
There is a plugin that lets everybody to edit their own comments – for 30 minutes or so.

“I don’t think so. People should think before commenting.”

well, we can disagree. i have the plugin you mention. the problem is that in wp 1.5 anyone who makes a top-level post can edit any commment made by anyone else to that post. as to whether this is a function of wp 1.5 or is something the plugin enables, i don’t know.

What is a “top level post”?

a post, as opposed to a comment to a post.

i have a group blog. a large number of people can make a post. anyone can comment. the person who made the original post can edit any comments made to his/her post, whether they made those comments themselves or not. now, you’ll say “people should have integrity and not edit other people’s comments”, but people are people.

In WP 2.x if you use the Role Manager plugin you can set up their role so that they can publish posts (eventually even edit them after publishing, though these are two different capabilities) but NOT being able to moderate comments.
    Would that help?

Or maybe look at forum software which does what you want, as opposed to a blog?

    whatever.

moshu, the 2.0 plus the role manager plugin seems like it would work. thanks! time to upgrade.
